CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP APPLICATION

Citizenship means many things to different people. To some, it means safety and security, home and belonging to a society, and to others it means equality. Whatever your beliefs are, we are here to help you in achieving your citizenship goals.

At Boghossian Morais LLP, our immigration lawyers will help you determine whether you are eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship. If so, our team will assist you with your application after our immigration lawyers advise you on the best course of action to obtain citizenship within the estimated processing time indicated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The most common avenues through which a person may acquire Canadian citizenship are:

  • by birth in Canadian soil (if you were born in Canada, then you are automatically a Canadian citizen);

  • by ‘blood’ (in certain situations, a person who was not born in Canada may apply for a certificate of Canadian citizenship after establishing that she or he derived citizenship at birth from a Canadian citizen living abroad); and,

  • by naturalization (permanent residents of Canada may apply for Canadian citizenship upon meeting the legislative requirements).

General legislative requirements to become a Canadian citizen

In order to become a Canadian citizen, you must meet certain criteria.

Generally, you must be at least 18 years of age, you must be a permanent resident who has been physically present in Canada for at least three out of the five years directly preceding the application for citizenship, you must be able to communicate adequately in either French or English languages, and you must have an adequate knowledge of Canada, including the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.

You may have noticed that in recent years that legislation around Canadian citizenship have changed somewhat, and it might appear to be more challenging than in the past. Guidelines are currently strict and of course, the number of applications continues to grow. Our immigration lawyers will work closely with you to review the applicable legislation and legal requirements, explaining in detail any points that may affect your application. Together, we will develop a strategy that strengthens your case and the likelihood of obtaining Canadian citizenship.
